"You inspired me to create a poem!"
"Write more books!"
"We had tons of fun!"

A few weeks ago I did my first in person school visit. This week I received a wonderful card from the class I visited with little thank you comments, a color version of the drawing I did in the class, and even a miniature replica of the book! Some comments from the kids:

I conducted a school author-visit to Spiritridge Elementary School (Bellevue WA) today where I spent an hour with a bunch of fourth graders. After reading poems from my book, talking about poetry, poetic forms, influences, and the poetry writing process, we decided to do a live spot drawing.
First I read them a poem by Shel Silverstein titled 'The Yippyuck' (about a thing called the Yippyuck which is not described in the poem). I then asked them to imagine, based on what they heard, what a Yippyuck would look like and drew it for them on the Smart Board as they described it, which turned out to be "big!", "fat!", "slimy!", "pointy nose!", "sharp ears!", "wings!", "fangs!", "evil smile!", "multiple eyes!", "five legs!", "duck tail!", "pig tail!", "antennas!". "tentacles!", "hair like medusa!", "halo!" .. needless to say we were all in splits by the end of this drawing session....! :) If you ever wondered what a creature designed by a roomful of 4th graders would look like, well this is it: 'The Bubble Collector' book is now available at Seattle's popular book store Mockingbird Books and also in downtown Edmonds at the Edmonds Bookshop.
Additionally, school libraries can now purchase the book through the Mackin catalog. If you know a school librarian you can ask them to look it up in Mackin. I did my first formal book signings this week. Bill & Jenny, the new owners of Page 2 Books in Burien were kind enough to invite me for a formal book signing and set up a little booth and table space in their new store which has a great, brightly-lit corner location. Through the time I was at the store, it was great chatting with the customers who drifted in and fun to sign books for everyone who bought a copy.
Buoyed by the event, I later decided to make an impromptu visit to Parkplace Books in Kirkland and University Book Store in Bellevue. At both book stores, most people I spoke with ended up buying the book and I did another flurry of signings for families and kids. We sold out most of the stock at hand in both stores. Lessons learnt: 1. Book signings are fun; 2. People love connecting with Authors; 3. Sometimes its just a matter of getting people to pick up your book for them to decide they like it enough to want to buy it... Time to line up a few more signing events... I am going to be doing my very first book signing event on December 14th 2013 Saturday 11:00am at Page 2 Books in Burien
I met Bill and Jenny, the new owners of Page 2 Books, at the recent NW BookFest. They seemed to really like 'The Bubble Collector' and went well out of their way to invite me to appear at their store. If you've been waiting to get a signed book (or want to get a copy for someone else - it's a great holiday gift) just come on by: 457 Southwest 152nd St. Burien, 98166
