Artist Hack: Paint Tube Organizer

8/19/2016

Ever since I started painting seriously, I've been frustrated by not being able to organize my paint-tube storage so that I can quickly find the color I am looking for in a painting session. I tried many different types of containers and boxes and invariably the tubes always ended up looking like this:
Picture
And when you're in the middle of a painting session, the last thing you want to do is go searching for a particular color - because it disrupts your flow. A web-search reveals some possibilities but they aren't necessarily practical, depending on your workspace, studio, or working style.

It was beginning to feel hopeless until I accidentally stumbled on a perfect solution: Kitchen Drawer Metal Trays!
Picture
I happened to buy one from a thrift store for general studio storage usage and then one day I accidentally placed a paint tube in it. And voila: it was perfect for propping up all the tubes in a way that allows you to read the labels and see the colors. Here are all my oil paints, propped up in a metal tray:
Picture
I was so excited I quickly ran out and bought another one at the thrift store for my Acrylic tubes:
Picture
No more rooting around in painttube boxes. Problem solved!

The only caveat I'll add is that there is no standard size to the metal trays - some may be too shallow, or too wide or too narrow to work effectively. When you go out to buy one, carry a couple of paint tubes with you to test the tray. Most thrift stores sell these for a couple of dollars (or less!).

Share this freely with your artist friends.

Also on display and sale, these framed original Pen & Ink drawings, make excellent holiday gifts. They're one of a kind and difficult to make, and I probably won't be doing them again next year, so it's a great opportunity to come snag one.

And yes, there will be hundreds (yes, hundreds!) of prints available to purchase:

Artist Hack: Ultra-cheap D.I.Y Print Rack

4/5/2015

Dear fellow artist - want a rack for your prints but don't want to spend $$$ in the art store? Build your own for about $6!
Picture
What you'll need:
1. This $5.99 Laundry Basket from Ikea
2. Some stiff cardboard, tape, and a pair of scissors
3. An old blanket or throw or something similar

Click on the first image below and step through the gallery - the instructions are in the captions.
Ok mine's a little crummy looking, but it works really well for storing prints in the back of my studio. You can use your imagination to make your's look prettier, more professional, or artistic. Enjoy!
